Historical background:
In 1883 the Berlin magistrate decided to solve the problems of a hygienic and comprehensive food supply for the city's rapidly growing population. In the immediate vicinity of the tenements and in the city center, 14 market halls were built under city planning and supervision. The idea was good, but the new market halls had poor transport facilities and an inadequate sales atmosphere. They also could not compete with the luxury department stores such as Wertheim or the KaDeWe coming up at the same time. After World War I and the Great Depression of 1929, the first market halls had to close. The destructions of World War II and the new shopping malls accelerated this development.
Nowadays only four historical market halls are left and the usage concepts have changed.
New trends can also be seen on the weekly markets, such as event gastronomy, street food markets, ecologically produced food, organic vegetables and vegan food, with a focus on regional products and in some cases high-priced and high-quality goods. We invite you to take part in this discovery tour.
Important advice:
Unfortunately, we can't offer this tour just as a city walk. The distances between markets and market halls are considerable. Therefore it is necessary to buy a day pass Berlin AB for public transportation. We also can offer this tour as by bike tour.
