Duration: 4 hours with a break
Meeting point: hotel / by agreement
Start: between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Tour description
The first stop on our walk is the old water tower. A plaque reminds us that in 1933 the Nazis had a hidden concentration camp on this site, which was used for interrogations and tortures. The Rykestrasse synagogue is right next door. It was
reopened in 1953 and is the largest synagogue in Berlin with a prayer room for an audience of 2,000. Next stop is the center of this neighborhood: Kollwitzplatz. The bronze sculpture by Gustav Seitz is a memorial for the artist Käthe Kollwitz. She lived in this area for many years. Cafés, restaurants and small shops are surrounding this square. We walk to Husemannstrasse, the only street in this district that was renovated during the commuinst era of GDR.
The Kulturbrauerei (cultural brewery), former factory of the local beer brand "Schultheiß", is now the cultural heart of Prenzlauer Berg district with cinemas, concert halls, clubs, museum and in every December with a beautiful Christmas market. We pass by the city's most famous currywurst location, at “Konopke Imbiss”. We walk to the beer garden “Prater” on Kastanienallee and Oderberger Straße till Mauerpark. Our walk ends at Zionskirchplatz. Dietrich Bonhöfer was the pastor of the Zions congregation. He resisted the Nazis as a member of the “Confessing Church”. Even during the GDR period, Zions church was a meeting place for opponents to the GDR regime, organized in the "church from below" or in the "environmental library".
