Tour description
We start our tour at the protestant Marienkirche on Alexanderplatz. In 1292 it was first mentioned as a parish church. We walk in direction of the Neptune Fountain and the Rotes Rathaus (Red Townhall), seat of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, till we reach the Nikolai Quarter, the oldest settlement area in the city. Almost completely destroyed in World War II, this part of the city was rebuilt till 1987 for Berlin's 750th anniversary. The Nikolaikirche is the oldest church building in the capital. Walking along the Spree we pass the sculpture of Saint George killing the dragon on horseback and then we will see coming up the new, white facade of "Humboldt Forum" building.
In front appears the dome of the Berlin Cathedral, the Lustgarten square and the buildings on Museum Island. We have a look inside the new main entrance of the Museum Island, the James Simon Gallery. Afterwards we go to the German Historical Museum. The Neue Wache (New Guard building) designed by Schinkel, the Bebelplatz with the German State Opera, catholic Saint Hedwig's Cathedral and the memorial to the book burning of May 1933 are our next stops. Two minutes later we arrive on one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin: the Gendarmenmarkt. Back on the boulevard Unter den Linden our city walk ends at Brandenburg Gate.
